We are works in progress

If there is anything that I can define this year as, it is a work in progress. As a teacher, I am a work in progress. My lesson plans are a work in progress. The data I take is a work in progress. This web site is a work in progress.

As a daughter, sister, dancer, woman, young adult, I am a work in progress. My students are a work in progress. My friends, coworkers, family, even you reading this, are a work in progress. The biggest thing is, you have to put in a lot of work in order to make some progress.

Work is learni20160921_134750ng, creating, and most of all DOING. when you embody the mentality of being a “work in progress” you do not stop to make excuses or complaints. WIP-ing it requires you to see the positive in everything, because mistakes are just new learning adventures. When you stop wip-ing it, that’s where you fall into the hole of negativity, where you stop making progress. It is important to keep that wip mentality up, or you’ll lose out on very important lessons that you need to learn.

But no worries, because if you didn’t learn enough the first time, it will come about again a second or twenty-second time! I can promise you, as a teacher of students with special needs, you really know that no two children are alike. I learn so much from each and every one of them – and if you don’t understand it the first time, you get to try and help and learn with them and their friends over and over and over and over again! Each day is a new adventure, live it up!

I need to give a special shout out to all of the parents who have kids with special needs. All parents, no matter what, have so much to teach and learn. But when you have a kid with special needs, you are on overdrive. You have so many choices to make, so many aspects of life to adapt to. You embrace the good and the bad and everything in between. Listen and trust those around you, but always remember you are the forever teacher. And with great power, comes great responsibility.

WIP-ing it requires you to embrace the giving, gratitude mentality. When you think “what can I give?” Instead of “what’s in it for me?” You are truly on your way to progress. When you are grateful for all of life’s bumpy and smooth roadways, you are a forever learner, and you are progressing.

WIP-ing it also requires you to adapt to, and embrace, change. As a teacher, our days change, our schedule changes, our kids may even change. Change is good, and it is important as a teacher for me to be excited about change, to make mistakes, or else my students will not know how to deal with change.

With change comes learning. With change comes progress. We are works in progress with a purpose.

Stay tuned for more WIPs by me soon!
